Microsoft, while declaring bumper over a million units sold within 24 hours, claimed that the console was sold out “at most retailers.” These claims are seemingly over-the-top considering that there are quite a few stores in prime locations in the US where there are ample of Xbox One Day One consoles still up for grabs.
According to a report on Dual Shockers Time Square Toys”R”Us store still has quite a few Xbox One consoles – in tune of “a few hundred” – still waiting to be sold. Best Buy stores in Midtown Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, still has a lot units which are unsold with rows of “super limited” black “day one” Xbox Ones.
N4G user JuniorCE has a similar report from Los Angeles stating that “day one” Xbox One consoles are still in stock.

The argument here could be that Microsoft shipped out more Xbox One consoles to most of its retail partners as compared to PlayStation 4 anticipating huge sales because of which the stores still have surplus stock.
We won’t know for sure up until Microsoft releases official sales figures for Xbox One as to how many units were actually sold and what kind of inventory did have in place to ensure smooth sales.
