Telegram grows huge post Facebook-WhatsApp buyout deal

Posted on 25 February 2014

It seems like Telegram is benefiting from WhatsApp’s buyout as Millions of users have reportedly switched to Telegram after Facebook made its move for the world’s largest messaging app.

Telegram revealed that around 5 million people signed up the messaging app on Sunday, making it the No. 1 iPhone app in 48 countries.

Pavel Durov, the creator of Telegram and the founder of Russian Facebook competitor VKontakte, said post WhatsApp buyout, “the app’s (Telegram) growth rate increased around 3x to 800,000 – 1 million new downloads a day across iOS, Android and Windows.”

On Saturday when WhatsApp went down for more than three hours, the messaging app added 1.8 million new users which grew to 4.95 million user signups on Sunday.

Durov said Telegram is growing huge in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and throughout Latin America — the regions which Zuckerberg claimed WhatsApp was strongest.

According to research firm App Annie, Telegram is adding users faster than WhatsApp in some countries and was the top downloaded social networking app in the AppStore in 56 countries on Monday.

With Telegram, users can create group chats with up to 200 people. It lets users share videos of up to 1GB and send unlimited photos from the web, and forward any media in an instant. The messaging app claims to be more focused on user’s privacy and security unlike WhatsApp.

The messaging app’s iPhone version was launched on August 14, 2013 and the Android version was officially launched on October 20, 2013.

According to Durov, Telegram currently entertains more than 20 million registered users with 15 million daily active users.
