Virgin Media is all set to expand broadband network coverage to another 100,000 East London homes to meet the growing superfast broadband demand.
The expansion, touted as to be the UK internet service provider’s largest ever single expansion, will offer broadband speeds of as high as 152Mbps to East London residents, Virgin Media claimed.
The internet service provider said the network extension work has already begun across Bethnal Green, the Isle of Dogs, Newham and West Ham, while homes in Stratford, Poplar, Stepney, Bow and East Ham to follow shortly after.
Virgin Media CEO Tom Mockridge said the fiber network expansion plan will benefit 100,000 East London homes. The expansion is a crucial investment for Virgin Media and also the company’s largest, single network expansion project to date. The company is proud to be offering broadband services to East London, helping and benefiting thousands of people to make the most of the UK’s exciting digital future, Mockridge said.
The rollout news has been applauded and welcomed by London Mayor Boris Johnson who claimed that fast broadband has now become a vital part of people’s everyday lives.
He said as London is earning a reputation of being Europe’s tech capital, it is to be ensured that each and every Londoner is able to access superfast broadband services.
Fast broadband has become a utility that every Londoner expects and this latest expansion will further aid in making that aim a reality, Johnson added.
Virgin Media made the expansion announcement at time of reporting its second quarter financial results, which showed an increase in cable coverage, to over 12.54 million homes, up from 12.49 million reported in the same period last year.
The firm’s user base increased from 4.879 million to 4.912 million customers, while its revenue for the quarter increased by three percent to £1.05bn.
