TomTom goes free on Android, but there’s a catch

Posted on 27 March 2015

TomTom has rolled out a new Android navigation app dubbed ‘TomTom Go Mobile’ that offers free navigation feature to Android devices, but those of you who are thinking of downloading it right now much read on to find out what’s the catch.

TomTom Go replaces the company’s previous paid-for Android app ‘TomTom Navigation.’ The new app shares the same user interface as the TomTom GO satnav.

The app’s features list includes offline map viewing, TomTom’s traffic services, speed camera warnings, and a global map license that lets users use the service in 111 countries without a network connection.

The new TomTom Go app offers users 50 miles of free navigation per month. Users, however, will need to sign up to a subscription if they wish to use the service for more than 50 miles each month. A one year subscription will cost £14.99, while a three year subscription will cost £34.99.

TomTom’s current Android app users will have the option to upgrade to a three-year unlimited navigation subscription for 50p with the new mobile app.

Users will have to have a Gmail account, a phone with Android 4.0.3 or later installed, and a screen resolution of at least 800 x 480 to download the new navigation app.

Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director for TomTom’s consumer division, said: “The TomTom GO Mobile app for Android is made for drivers who want to experience the best of TomTom on their smartphone.”

“We have entirely re-thought our mobile solution so every driver has the chance to try navigation with TomTom Traffic. Now all Android owners can avoid the traffic jams and get to their destinations faster, every day.”

The free app is currently available for download from the Google Play store.
