Three UK to roll out VoLTE across 4G network later this year

Posted on 26 April 2015

UK Mobile operator Three has announced it will introduce voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) to its network sometime later this year.

At a press event the operator said VoLTE will be rolled out to customers in the autumn and that it expects around one million customers to be able to make calls using VoLTE by the end of the year and 7.5 million by 2016.

Three has already out the names of handsets which will support VoLTE when it arrives. The list includes
the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9 and Apple’s next-generation’iPhone 7′.

The UK mobile operator announced that it also plans to operate on 800MHZ spectrum which was acquired during the 2012 4G auction to expand it’s LTE reach across the UK, boost indoor signal as well as to reduce the number of mobile blackspots.

“Our aim is to keep our customers connected wherever they are,” said Bryn Jones, Three chief technical officer.

“Adding low frequency spectrum to our network and enabling voice calls over 4G and Wi-Fi, will mean Three customers can stay connected in more places than ever before.”

“With roaming at no extra cost also available in 18 destinations, Three is doing more than any other network to give our customers a reliable, quality experience wherever they are.”

Meanwhile, the operator also announced that more than 1 million customers have downloaded and activated the Three InTouch app, which enables users to call and text over wi-fi.

Danny Dixon, director of Customer Strategy, said “The Three inTouch app has been highly successful with over 1million users to date.

“Seamless connectivity on mobile and wi-fi is a key part of our future strategic direction and by using the app, our customers will never miss that important call or text, whether they’re in the home, commuting to work, or away on holiday.”
