Synology on Tuesday unveiled the DiskStation DS415play, a four-bay network-attached storage (NAS) server.
The successor to the two-bay DS214play supports hardware video transcoding and is designed to deliver full 1080p HD video to virtually any media-streaming device available in the market.
The server supports video formats such as H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-2, and VC-1.The DS415play runs on Synology’s latest DiskStation Manager 5 software allowing it to act as a multimedia hub for households with lots of media streaming needs.
The company claims that users will be able to use the DS415play to output multiple concurrent streams to various devices such as Apple TV, DLNA devices, mobile devices, and computers.
Powered by the latest DiskStation Manager (DSM 5.0), the DS415play is built around an Intel Atom 1.6GHz dual-core processor, supported by 1GB RAM. The new entrant has 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports, allowing for peripheral connection.
Synology says its own tests clock RAID 5 file transfers at an average speed of 112.45MB/sec on read and 101.21 MB/sec on write. As each bay is capable of holding up to 6TB in storage, the total storage capacity of the server extends to up to 24TB.
The Synology DiskStation DS415play will be available in the UK for around £400 ($540) diskless.
