As part of a major executive reshuffle, Google’s Sundar Pichai has been elevated to lead even more of the company’s core products.
According to the Recode report, citing an internal memo and people close to the situation, the India-born Google veteran has been entrusted with the task of leading the internet giant’s key business products including search, maps, infrastructure, Google+, ads and commerce, research as well as infrastructure.
Pichai, who is currently serving as Google’s Senior Vice President already, has Chrome’s browser and operating system efforts, Google Apps and Android in his portfolio.
The six executives leading each of the key product areas, including the heads of research, social media and search, will now report directly to Pichai instead of Page. However, Google’s popular video streaming website, YouTube, run by veteran Google employee Susan Wojcicki, will continue to report directly to Page.
As per the report, the latest move will help Page to better focus on new products, including projects coming out of the Google X division.
Born in eastern Indian city of Chennai in 1972, Pichai earned a Bachelor’s degree in Technology from IIT-Kharagpur in West Bengal, a Master’s degree from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He worked at Applied Materials and at McKinsey & Co before joining Google in 2004.
Pichai’s previous promotion was in March 2012 when he was transferred control of Google Apps and later in March 2013, when he took reigns of Google’s powerful mobile operating system, Android, in his hands.
