Samsung has announced industry’s first ever 8Gb low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM that will most probably pave way for 4GB RAM on mobile, tablets and other such devices.
Already a leader in the 4Gb and 6Gb LPDDR3, Samsung fabricated the new LPDDR4 DRAM on 20-nanometer (nm) class technology. The new DRAM offers 1GB on a single die and four such dies could be fit on a single package and offer 4GB RAM for mobile devices.
Samsung claims that the new LPDDR4 interface provides 50 percent performance boost and consumes 40 percent less energy than the fastest LPDDR3 memory. Samsung said that the new LPDDR4 chip has data transfer rates of 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps) per pin and will allow vendors to pack higher resolution displays and more advanced features into their hardware.
“Overall, the new LPDDR4 interface will provide 50 percent higher performance than the fastest LPDDR3 or DDR3 memory while consuming approximately 40 percent less energy at 1.1 volts” announced Samsung in a press release.
Samsung claims that the 8Gb mobile DRAM chip will rapidly expand the market for high-density DRAM in next-generation mobile devices including smartphone and tablets. Samsung will start shipping the chips in early 2014.
