Samsung launches Exynos 5422, Exynos 5260 SoCs at MWC 2014

Posted on 26 February 2014

Samsung revealed two new Exynos processors – Exynos 5422 Octa and Exynos 5260 Hexa, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

Last week, Samsung teased an image with the tag “Exynos Infinity, in Barcelona,” in a Twitter campaign, with rumors suggesting for a 64-bit chipset. The company, however, hasn’t come up with any 64-bit, but has announced two new 32-bit processors at the MWC 2014.

Samsung in recent tweets said the new chips will help “innovation and performance come together,” and accelerate “possibilities and discovery,” claiming it to be just the first step in the Exynos Infinity journey.

First, in the lineup of the Exynos 5 Octa system-on-chip – the Exynos 5422 Octa, a high-end application processor with eight cores: four ARM 2.1 GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four smaller ARM Cortex-A7 cores clocked at up to 1.5 GHz.

The four high-power cores are for intensive tasks while the four low-power cores handle usual tasks like calls, texts and music. This chip uses 28nm technology offering 10 percent power reduction and comes with Heterogeneous Multi Processing technology for delivering up to 34 percent higher performance compared to its predecessors. The Exynos 5422 is scheduled for mass production in the first quarter of 2014.

The second new processor is the Exynos 5260 Hexa that powers the new Galaxy Note 3 Neo. This Soc packs six CPU cores: two 1.7 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 cores, and four 1.3 GHz ARM Cortex-A7 cores and comes with Heterogeneous Multi Processing technology, allowing all six cores to be used simultaneously. The Exynos 5260 is already in production.

The new chips support 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution displays including Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels), 4K UHD, and WQXGA (2560 x 1600 pixels) and are equipped with a technology that will reduce screen power consumption.
