Samsung Electronics has discovered a new synthesis method which it claims is not only groundbreaking but will also speed up the commercialisation of Graphene – something that wasn’t possible up until now.
Graphene, which was discovered back in 2004, is known as the thinnest material as well as a good conductor of electricity and heat. Graphene has 100 times greater electron mobility than silicon – the most common material found in semiconductors today.
However, use of Graphene in mainstream electronic products wasn’t possible for the lack of cost effective commercial production techniques. Previous attempts to grow large area wafer didn’t bear fruits as Graphene lost some of its properties when synthesized.
“This is one of the most significant breakthroughs in graphene research in history,” said the laboratory leaders at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology [SAIT]’s Lab.
“We expect this discovery to accelerate the commercialization of graphene, which could unlock the next era of consumer electronic technology.”
SAIT has been working in partnership with Sungkyungkwan University’s School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering and that’s where the researchers found the new method of synthesizing large area, single crystal wafer scale graphene.
Researchers revealed that the new method doesn’t use the original multi-crystal synthesis method but instead uses a single-crystal on a semiconductor that repeatedly synthesizes.
Samsung claims that the higher durability of Graphene, its high heat conductibility and flexibility makes it an ideal candidate and material for “use in flexible displays, wearables and other next generation electronic devices.”
