Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature 16MP camera

Posted on 22 October 2013

Samsung S5 will be featuring 16-megapixel camera, a major boost from S4’s 13-megapixel, and two companies are battling it out to gain the order for the camera sensor.

According to report on ETNews Samsung has decided to fit a 16-megapixel camera on its next flagship device – Galaxy S5, which is slated for release in first half of 2014. Sony and Samsung LSI are trying to woo Samsung in a bid to gain camera sensor orders for the Galaxy S5. Sony had absolute control over the 13-megapixel CMOS sensor market up until Samsung LSI broke its monopoly.

Those aware about Samsung’s plans claim that the company is prepping for 16-megapixel sample tests as early as next month and is likely to select a supplier by year end. Samsung may be inclined to go with Samsung LSI considering that it is a part of Samsung Electronics; however, it is not clear how much expertise the company holds currently when it comes to 16-megapixel cameras and whether the company is in a position to mass produce the cameras.

Samsung LSI has announced improvement to its technology including ISOCELL and optical image stabilization, but if it is not able to cater to the requirements of Samsung, Sony may finally grab the orders to supply camera to Samsung for the Galaxy S5.

There have been mixed reports when it comes to the casing of the Galaxy S5 as some faction of the rumour mongers are claiming that Samsung will be going for a full metal casing while others are of the opinion that Samsung will go for a faux-leather based cover just like it Note 3.

Earlier reports indicated that Samsung will not be able to fit in a 14-nm processor in Galaxy S5 as it is not in a position to mass produce the 14-nm 64-bit processors to meet with S5 deadline for an early 2014 release.
