Rust hits 1 million units sold milestone in 2 months

Posted on 12 February 2014

Brutal survival game Rust has sold more than 1 million since its launch over 2 months ago.

Garry Newman, founder of Facepunch Studios and developer of Garry’s Mod, announced this achievement through a tweet containing a link to the screenshot referencing lifetime total units of 1,001,570 this Monday.

Rust, originally designed as a clone of DayZ evolved as a cross of DayZ and Minecraft, was released on Steam Early Access on December 11. This 1 million units sold achievement comes after Newman’s announcement last month that Rust over a five week period had made 40 percent of what Garry’s Mod had generated in a little over 9 years.

“Saying we’re surprised is a total understatement,” Garry Newman said notes Polygon.

“We never expected Rust to ever sell over a million copies, to sell over a million within a couple of months while still in really early development is insane to us.”

Garry Newman believes that the extra money will give them extra wiggle room to experiment, but at the same time, the popularity will bring increased pressure to evolve the game in-line with players’ expectations.

“Selling this many copies isn’t without worries,” Newman said. “Will these millions of people expect us to evolve the game in the ways we’re going to evolve it? Will we be able to make them happy? The tens of millions of dollars [may] take the edge off slightly, but we still have these worries.”

Since its launch, Rust has been dominating the Steam Sales Chart outselling DayZ. The game, currently in the rough alpha state, is available on Steam for $19.99 USD.
