Opus – the totally free, open and royalty-free audio codec – has finally received its version 1.1 stable after being in development for months.
The new version of Opus brings with it quite a few new features including improved variable bit-rate encoding quality, automatic detection of speech or audio for better encoding decision, improved support for surround sound at 128kbps for 5.1-channel audio, and speed improvements on all architectures.
The speed improvements on ARM are noticeable for the fact that the team claims that the “decoding uses around 40% less CPU and encoding uses around 30% less CPU.”
