Nokia made headlines because of a teaser it posted hinting at a possible return in the devices market and the anticipation turned out to be true as the Finnish giant has revealed an Android tablet dubbed N1.
The company on Monday teased a picture of a mysterious black box alongside the text: “Hello! We’ve got an exciting week planned for you. Are you ready?” via its official Twitter handle. The social media post also included the hashtags #thinkingahead and #Slush14, which indicated that the company is to reveal more about the new product at the Slush 2014 technology conference.
Slush 2014 is an event for startups and technology companies which will be held in Helsinki on 18 and 19 November.
The Nokia N1 is a 7.9-inch Android tablet resembling a giant iPhone thanks to some Nokia software that the tablet is running. The N1 is go on sale in China first in time for the Chinese New Year (that’s February 19, 2015) with a price tag of $250. Nokia said that the tablet will be launched in Russia soon after.
In terms of specifications, the Nokia N1 packs a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 paired with 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, 32GB internal storage, reversible USB Type C port, twin set of speakers, Android 5.0, Nokia’s homegrown Z Launcher, among other things.
Nokia has sold off its handset division to Microsoft, but as far as tablets are concerned it is not done yet – at least that the message we get from recent N1 unveil.
As confirmed by Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri, who said Nokia won’t be returning back to the handset industry and would rather to focus on networking, technologies, and maps division at a recent analyst meeting in London, N1 for sure doesn’t belong to the handset segment.
Nokia will be free to move back into smartphones beginning in 2016, that’s how long Msft licensed the nokia name for its lumias
