Nokia X2 debuts as Microsoft’s first Android smartphone

Posted on 24 June 2014

After a week of teasing, Microsoft finally took the wraps of its first Android powered smartphone dubbed the Nokia X2, targeted at the budget end of the market.

The X2 features a 4.3-inch Clearblack touch display, slightly larger than the predecessor Nokia X, powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and 1GB RAM. The handset runs Nokia X software version 2.0, a customised version of Android based on AOSP Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Nokia X2 sports a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a basic front-facing camera for video calling and selfies. The handset supports dual-SIM, a 1,800mAh battery and includes 15GB of on-device storage for multimedia, photos, apps and more. Another notable feature making it to the X2 is the addition of a home key below the screen.

Along with Fastlane, the X2 also features an ‘apps list’ which will let users only keep their most frequently used apps on the homescreen. The handset supports 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS as connectivity options.

With measures of 121.7 x 68.3 x 11.1mm and a weight of 150gms the X2 is a bit bulkier than its predecessor which weighs 129 grams.

Skype, HERE Maps, MixRadio, Outlook.com, OneNote and OneDrive are some of the apps that will come preloaded on the new smartphone. It can run Android apps which can be downloaded through the Nokia Store and other third party app stores.

The new Nokia X series phone, which features a translucent outer layer, will be available in Glossy Black, Green, Orange, Dark Grey, White and Yellow.

The Nokia X2, priced at €99 (US$135), has been made available in selected countries only. There’s no information about the device’s UK release yet.
