Minecraft goes to Hollywood; deal in progress confirms creator

Posted on 28 February 2014

Warner Bros. are looking to cash-in on Minecraft’s huge success and are currently in talks with Swedish indie developer Mojang AB to acquire the rights for making a movie based on the creative building simulation.

Initially reported by Deadline and then confirmed by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson himself, a Minecraft movie is on the cards.

Deadline claimed in its report that “Roy Lee is going to produce Minecraft via his Vertigo Entertainment production company along with Jill Messick (Mean Girls and Mean Moms) who will also produce in some capacity.”

Taking note of this report, Notch tweeted “Someone is trying leak the fact that we’re working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie. I wanted to be the leak!”

While speaking with the Guardian, Notch confirmed that he is in talks with Warner Bros. and that the deal is in progress, but nothing is confirmed yet. Persson revealed that Mojang will at least retain creative control over the project and that Mojang will not be signing a ‘do whatever you want to this IP’ deal.

The open-world game has met with huge success in almost all gaming platforms including PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS and Android. Fairly recently the game surpassed a 100 million registered users milestone on the PC version alone.

Minecraft movie is likely to be a huge success considering the recent performance of The Lego Movie, which has managed to rake in whopping $187 million domestically and $93.5 million internationally in just four weeks since launch.

It would be interesting to see how the storyline of Minecraft takes form as the game in itself is an open-world simulation with players in charge of creating their own avatars, structures and other things across multiple game modes and various players.
