Microsoft has confirmed that select Lumia users, with the Lumia Denim update installed, will be able to download future software updates, directly to their device’s microSD card.
The Lumia Denim update is the software giant’s latest firmware update for Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia smartphones. The recently rolled out update brings with it the voice assistant Cortana to a few more regions, Apps Corner app, touchscreen enhancements, conventional stability and performance enhancements as well as a range of bug fixes.
Unfortunately, only select Lumia smartphones – specifically those running Lumia Denim update or the latest Developer Preview and sporting build number 8.10.14219.341 and higher will be able to download OS updates directly to their SD cards.
Compatible handsets, as listed by Microsoft include: Lumia 530, Lumia 530 Dual SIM, Lumia 630, Lumia 630 Dual SIM, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730 Dual SIM, Lumia 735 and Lumia 830.
The handsets that include microSD card support but are not included in the list are Lumia 520, Lumia 525, Lumia 620, Lumia 625, Lumia 720, Lumia 820, Lumia 1320 and Lumia 1520. The Redmond hasn’t mentioned as why these Lumia handsets are not eligible to snag the Denim firmware update.
Lumia smartphone users can check which OS build their handsets are sporting by navigating to App list > Settings > About > More Info.
Microsoft has confirmed that all Windows Phone 8.1-based devices will begin receiving the update from early January, 2015.
