Microsoft was forced to rebrand its cloud storage service after a loss of a trademark dispute with British Sky Broadcasting Group over the “SkyDrive” name and now it has officially renamed its cloud storage service SkyDrive to OneDrive globally.
The Redmond Company informed that existing SkyDrive customers can access their files, which are already in OneDrive by simply logging into www.onedrive.com with their existing SkyDrive credentials.
Microsoft, in an attempt to lure new customers, has announced new promotional incentives wherein it will offer customers 7 GB of storage for free. Existing users, who refer OneDrive to their friends, will be able to get an additional storage space of up to 5 GB (in 500 MB increments) for each friend who accepts an invitation. An additional 3 GB of storage will be gifted to users for using the OneNote camera back-up feature.
With the new name, Microsoft is also rolling out some new OneDrive features including an automatic camera roll backup feature to its Android app. The company is also introducing a new monthly payment plan for their OneDrive users which will allow them to ramp up storage for specific events or occasions.
Also to celebrate the official launch of OneDrive, the company will be giving the first 100,000 people who sign onto their OneDrive account 100GB of extra storage space for one year.
OneDrive is now available on all major platforms and devices including Windows PC, Windows Phone, Mac, iPhone, and Android devices.
