iWatch to sport round sapphire display; mark the end of Apple’s iPod

Posted on 29 May 2014

Apple’s long-rumored iWatch, is far from confirmed officially, but that has not stopped the rumor mill or the analysts from coming up with information, and the latest bullet point in the iWatch rumour list has to do with the smartwatch’s design.

A recent report from Brian Blair, an analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, citing supply chain sources, claims that the iWatch will have a rounded display, much like the Moto 360, but with a more slimmer profile.

According to the report in Business Insider, Blair believes that the Cupertino giant will position the smartwatch to largely supplant the declining iPod business, as the company did not refresh its iPod lineup last year.

The analyst said that the iWatch will be revealed in multiple “models,” with a particular model sporting “sapphire screen,” which Business Insider interprets to mean Apple is developing distinct versions for men and women.

This falls in line with the report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, claiming that Apple will ship iWatch in a variety of materials at various prices, as the company is targeting both the low- and high-end smartwatch market.

Blair added that the company is planning to start the smartwatch production in July or August and around 18 to 21 million wearable devices will be manufactured during the second half of 2014. He also noted that it’s very unlikely for the iWatch to be ready for release along with the iPhone 6 variants.

Rumors have it that the iWatch will pack basic health monitoring features, and sync with an iOS device to share biometric data with iOS apps, including a new Healthbook app, speculated to debut in iOS 8.

However, Apple is expected to unveil some early details or any kind of official information about the much awaited iWatch at the 2014 WWDC next week.
