Displays for the Apple’s next-generation smartphone iPhone 6 will begin mass production as early as May, claimed latest report.
According to the Reuters report, supply chain sources have suggested that the company is to put 4.7-inch screens into production soon, and 5.5-inch displays later. The report stated that Japan Display, Sharp Corp and LG Display will be undertaking the production of screens.
Japan Display would first begin production of iPhone 6 screens at its plant at Mobara, Tokyo early in May, while the other two suppliers are expected to begin output by June.
The sources also added that the screens of both the iPhone 6 versions are to be developed using “in-cell touch panel technology,” introduced in iPhone 5, in which the touch-sensitive element is built into the screen to allow thinner and lighter construction compared to the standard touch panel films.
However, the sources revealed that the company is facing some difficulties with in-cell production technology for the larger 5.5-inch screen size and the production could be delayed for several months. Due to which Apple is rumored to have decided to launch its 4.7-inch screen phone first.
The sources also added that there is a possibility that Apple could shift to a film sensor for the 5.5-inch screens, rather than in-cell technology.
Apple as well as three suppliers have refused to comment on any rumors or speculations.
Apart from the screen sizes, there isn’t much information about the company’s flagship smartphone. Previous speculations suggest that both the models of iPhone 6 will be thinner than the iPhone 5S at 7.6mm thick, and feature an upgraded processor, iOS 8 and an improved 13MP camera.
