Intel CEO Brian Krzanich on Tuesday announced the processor shipment numbers for the first quarter of the current year wherein one of the key highlights was that Intel-powered Android tablets shipments were around 4 times the Windows counterparts.
During the earnings call following the release of the firm’s Q1 financial results, Krzanich revealed that a total of 5 million tablet specific processors were shipped, among which 80 to 90 percent were for Android devices. The rest 10 to 20 percent is said to be Windows tablets, notes CNet.
Krzanich also said that the company is expected to ship more than 40 million processors for tablets this year, with Android in majority.
The estimated 40 million shipments of Intel tablets this year, if reached will give the company 15 to 20 percent of the tablet market share, Intel CFO Stacy Smith said on the earnings call.
“Our mix of OSes reflects pretty much what you see in the marketplace,” Krzanich said, adding that the majority of tablets sold cost between £75 ($125) and £149 ($250), notes Computer World.
However, Intel is not abandoning Windows as Krzanich said that he expects Windows to “grow and gain traction.”
Most of the tablets (Android, iOS and Windows) in the market feature processor designs of ARM, Qualcomm, Nvidia and other SoCs. In case of Intel-powered tablets powered by Android, the older Medfield and Clover Trail+ chips are the highly used chips.
Krzanich also said that more Intel-based tablets (Android as well as Windows) will be unveiled in June at the Computex trade show in Taipei.
Further, the chip maker will also push into the tablet market with several new products, including Intel SoFIA chip, aimed at budget smartphones and tablet devices.
For the first quarter of 2014, Intel posted revenue of $7.94 billion, down from the $8.54 billion Q1 last year.
