Intel has acquired yet another wearable device maker Basis Science for an undisclosed amount thereby strengthening its position in the hardware market.
Basis Science is known for its high-end health and wellbeing wearable gadgets – the most famous being Basis band that allows users to capture their heart rate.
“Today marks a special day for the entire Basis family – our team, our customers and all those who have supported and believed in our vision. We are excited to announce that Basis has been acquired by Intel”, noted Basis in a blog post.
“While it is a new beginning in some ways, we remain true to the simple mission we started with – to build products that help people lead healthier lives.”
Intel’s primary motive behind Basis’ acquisition is a direct entry into the health tracking gadget market and this is evident from Intel vice president and general manager Mike Bell’s statement. “The acquisition of Basis Science provides immediate entry into the market with a leader in health tracking for wearable devices”, Bell said.
Intel has been pushing a lot towards wearable gadget market and company’s CEO Brian Krzanich utilised CES 2014’s stage to promote a range of reference designs of such devices including smart earbuds, Jarvis earpiece among others.
The move towards wearables indicates company’s efforts to capitalise on a new and emerging segment after it more or less missed the mobile computing bandwagon.
