Huawei takes the wraps off new flagship ‘P8’ and ‘P8 Max’

Posted on 16 April 2015

Huawei on Wednesday took it to the London event stage to unveil two of its new flagship smartphones dubbed the ‘P8’ and the ‘P8 Max.’

Successor to Huawei’s Ascend P7 dubbed ‘P8’ is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Cortex-A53 Hisilicon Kirin 935 SoC clocked at 2GHz coupled with 3GB RAM. The standard P8 model will ship with 16GB of internal memory, while a more expensive, premium option carries 64GB.

The handset features a 5.2in full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) IPS-Neo panel, which has a high 1500:1 contrast ratio. There’s a 13MP rear camera, which Huawei claims is the first in the world to feature a four-color RGBW sensor, and an 8MP front shooter on board.

The P8 runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, with Huawei’s EMUI 3.1 on top. Backed by a 2680mAh battery, the smartphone is said to run for 2.3 days of regular use and 1.5 days on heavy usage.

The smartphone measures 144.9×72.1×6.4mm and weighs 144 grams. In terms of connectivity, the handset supports 4G LTE and Huawei’s new ‘Signal+ Technology’ which is said to connect with network roaming services around three times faster than the average handset.

The standard Huawei P8, with 16GB of storage, will cost 499 Euro (£357) and will be available in Titanium Grey or Mystic Champagne color options, while the premium version offering 64GB of storage will cost 599 Euro (£429) and will be available in Carbon Black or Prestige Gold color options.

The larger sibling Huawei Ascend P8 Max features a 6.8-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) resolution display with pixel density of 326ppi.

Powered by the same 64-bit octa-core Hisilicon Kirin 935 SoC, but clocked at 2.2GHz, the Ascend P8 max features 3GB RAM alongside a Mali-T628 MP4 GPU. The Huawei Ascend P8 max comes with the same 13-megapixel rear camera module as the Ascend P8, but sports a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

Backed by a 4360mAh battery, the device is rated to last for over two days of normal usage and 1.5 day of heavy usage, while it can offer 15 hours of continuous video playback. The P8 Max runs the same Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, with Huawei’s EMUI 3.1 on top.

The LTE-enabled Ascend P8 max measures 182.7x93x6.8mm and weighs 228 grams. The handset also equips a 7-layer heat conducting structure, which keeps the processor’s temperature 5 degrees lower than its competing devices.

Both the Ascend P8 and Ascend P8 max sport a metal unibody design made of space-grade aluminium.

The standard Huawei P8 Max offering 32GB of storage will cost 549 Euro (£393) and will be available in Titanium Grey and Mystic Champagne color options, while the premium Huawei P8 Max, with 64GB of storage, will cost 649 Euro (£465) and will be available in Titanium Grey and Prestige Gold color options.

Both the new flagship smartphones will initially be available in more than 30 countries including China, Columbia, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, UAE, and the United Kingdom.
