Google on Wednesday acquired Flutter, a gesture recognition company, for an undisclosed amount. Flutter app runs on Mac and Windows machines allowing users to control iTunes, PowerPoint, Spotify and a number of other programs with simple hand gestures using a computer’s built-in webcam without requiring any special hardware.
Announcing the takeover, Navneet Dalal, CEO Flutter, said “Today, we are thrilled to announce that we will be continuing our research at Google”.
“We share Google’s passion for 10x thinking, and we’re excited to add their rocket fuel to our journey”, He added.
A spokeswoman from Google confirmed the news saying that Flutter’s research will be supported by Google and the team will continue its research efforts at the company’s Mountain View headquarters. The terms and conditions of the deal have not yet been made public.
Google’s Flutter acquisition is an indication that the search engine giant is betting big on gesture control and that it may soon bless its products like Google Glass and Chromebooks with such capabilities.
The company’s founder Mehul Nariyawala has stated that “Flutter wants to power the eyes of our devices — in the same way that Siri functions as the iPhone’s ears.”
This technology is very popular in the dorm rooms across the more wild-eyed campuses of America’s universities. Getting some virtual jiggly jiggy can couple with Facebook. Some of my friends are into it but to me it’s just another form of crap that is a poor substitute for a quality minded boyfriend/girlfriend.
