Google has announced that it will soon build an in-house security team by employing more than 200 full- and part-time security guards, who will be eligible for company benefits as well.
Until now, Google had been banking upon outside contractor, Security Industry Specialists, for placing contract staff in functions including security guards, janitors and cooks. But from now onwards, the company will hire its own security guards and provide them with full array of company benefits including retirement benefits, health insurance and parental leave, the Wall Street Journal noted.
“Building an in-house security team is something we are excited to do. A year ago we in-sourced the Google security operations centre and we are looking forward to making these valued positions both full- and part-time Google employees,” a Google spokeswoman said.
However, Google will continue using current security contractor as the company builds its in-house security force.
The company’s latest move comes after labour organization, Working Partnerships USA, stressed in an August report that Silicon Valley companies do not share their success with underpaid black, Latino and immigrant workers, hired through contractors, as landscaping workers, janitors, cooks and security guards, who work day and night to keep their companies running.
Google also faced protest from the Service Employees World Union last year, demanding the company should hire contractors who pay guards better and allow them to form unions.
