EE’s 4G userbase hits 5.6 million milestone

Posted on 22 October 2014

EE has grown huge to become the Europe’s biggest 4G mobile operator with a userbase of whopping 5.6 million.

Announcing third quarter results on Wednesday, the mobile operator revealed it has added 1.4 million 4G customers in the September ending quarter, marking its largest quarterly growth ever, and taking the total 4G user count to 5.6 million.

EE said 82 per cent of new pay-monthly customers opted for 4G plans during the quarter with a one-third of them selecting double-speed 4GEE Extra.

The more than satisfying Q3 results have further strengthened EE’s hope to reach six million 4G customers by the end of the year.

EE said it expects to roll out double-speed 4G to 40 cities across the country by this year end.

EE revealed that the number of connections on its network via mobile virtual network operator deals, such as with Asda or BT which use the EE network to sell mobile services to customers, has grown to 3.8 million, up 5.6 percent year on year.

The mobile operator saw a net increase of 178,000 postpaid connections including M2M (Machine to Machine) devices, and a net increase of 119,000 postpaid mobile customers (excluding M2M).

Despite growth in 4G user base, EE reported its revenues for the quarter had fallen by 1.2 percent to £1.52bn owing to regulatory cuts.

Neal Milsom, chief financial officer of EE, said the firm was “delivering consistent underlying performance in a highly competitive environment while continuing to face significant regulatory pressure on our revenues”.

“We are investing to further innovate on behalf of our customers by delivering not just the best network but also improvements in customer service, a range of attractive EE branded devices, Shared Plans, and soon EE TV,” Wilson added.
