EE extends 4G service to 14 more towns and 18 airports

Posted on 20 February 2014

EE, one of UK’s leading mobile operators, on Wednesday announced it has now 14 more towns and 18 airports under its 4G LTE coverage that brings the total of connected towns and cities to 174 or 70 percent of the total population.

Belper, Cannock, Ellesmere Port, Grangemouth, Harrogate, Hartlepool, Keighley, Motherwell, Paignton, Richmond in North Yorkshire, Skelmersdale, Torquay and Widnes are the additional 14 towns to get 4G from EE.

EE’s 4G network now also covers eighteen of the UK’s airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool John Lennon, Bristol, Nottingham East Midlands, Leeds-Bradford, Belfast International, George Best Belfast City, Robin Hood and Blackpool.

The mobile operator is planning to bring 4G connectivity to some of UK’s busiest rail routes some time later this year – initially on the London Euston to Birmingham New Street line with Manchester to Liverpool, London Victoria to Brighton to follow.

EE is also looking forward to improve call quality across the UK in a bid to make voice calls more “consistent” and “reliable” across major motorways and train lines.

Olaf Swantee, CEO at EE, said: “Our network investment in 2014 is not just about giving people faster mobile data – phone calls are still an incredibly important part of the mobile experience, and we’re investing to ensure people travelling all over the UK can make phone calls in more places and with better quality than ever before.”

In addition the company has also announced that it will create more than 1,000 new customer-service jobs in the UK over the next 24 months.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the company’s initiative stating that “It’s great news that EE is bringing over 1,000 jobs back to the UK. As part of our long term economic plan, I believe we can become the world’s leading re-shoring nation and provide new opportunities for hard working people.”
