Cisco has kicked off a grand challenge with $300,000 in prize money that invites the global security community to propose intelligent cyber security solutions.
The grand challenge aims to address threats that can arise with the Internet of Things (IoT) proceeding to greater adoption that is expected to be 50 billion by 2020.
Christopher Young, senior vice president for the security group at Cisco, while addressing the RSA conference, announced the Internet of Things Security Grand Challenge, with submission deadline of June 17, 2014.
“Yet, as our connected lives grow and become richer, the need for a new security model becomes even more critical. It requires that we work together as a community to find innovative solutions to make sure that the IoT securely fulfills its potential and preserves the convenience that it represents,” wrote Young, in the blog post.
“With this in mind, Cisco is launching the Internet of Things Security Grand Challenge. We’re inviting you — the global security community — to propose practical security solutions across the markets being impacted daily by the IoT.”
Young claimed the challenge to be a contest for experts around the world to submit proposals that could define a future of a secure IoT.
According to the submission criteria for the IoT grand challenge, contestants should submit a brief (four to six pages) non-confidential proposal with detailed description marking the key differentiation in the solution, along with case studies of successful applications of the solution.
The call for proposals will be open from February 27, 2014 to June 17, 2014 with the evaluation set to take up to September 2014. Up to six winning solutions that meet the evaluation criteria will be announced by the fall of 2014 at the Cisco IoT World Forum and rewarded with $50,000 and $70,000.
