BT Sport has confirmed its support for Google’s new HDMI TV dongle Chromecast, few weeks after the device was launched in the UK and ten new countries.
The ‘cast’ button will arrive on the BT Sport app on Android and iOS devices with the update to be rolled out on 7 April. This move will make BT Sport, the second UK broadcaster available through Google’s HDMI dongle which was before exclusive to BBC iPlayer only.
“Customers with Chromecast will be able to enjoy the BT Sport App, which is free with broadband from BT, on a large screen, allowing customers to cast a Barclays Premier League match to their TV, rather than watching on a smaller screen,” said Pete Oliver, managing director of marketing at BT, while announcing the support update.
“This helps us to deliver on our aim to bring the best quality sport to BT customers at affordable prices across a wide number of platforms and devices.”
Earlier this week, European retailers revealed that the Google Chromecast to be a massive hit in the UK, with a Chromecast unit being sold every 4.5 seconds. The addition of BT Sport is expected to boost the sales of Chromecast even more.
The £30 chromecast is a small dongle that people can plug directly into their TVs to access songs, albums, movies, pictures, and other types of content from apps on a mobile device or desktop browser to their big screen.
With this update BT broadband customers will be able to access the telecoms provider’s sports channels through the Google Chromecast platform. YouTube, Google Play, and Netflix are some of the other big-name apps associated with Google’s new TV streaming service.
