Argos joins low-cost Android tablet bandwagon with £100 MyTablet

Posted on 15 October 2013

British retailer Argos has announced £100 MyTablet just in time for the upcoming holiday season thereby adding one more tablet to the already crowded Android tablet market space.

The 7-inch budget Android tablet running Android 4.2.2 will go head-to-head against the recently announced Tesco Hudl retailing at £119. With the current pricing, MyTablet will not only be a good competitor to the Hudl, it will effectively rival the 7-inch offerings from Lenovo, HP and Google; however, screen resolution and internal storage may be bit of a hurdle.

Argos MyTablet will be powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz, 7-inch 1,024 x 600 LCD screen, 8GB internal storage, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The tablet will also come preloaded with BBC’s iPlayer service as well as games such as Angry Birds. The MyTablet will come preloaded with other apps that will allow customers shop online with retailers. According to BBC, Argos is going to target the “”tweenie” market of eight- to 13-year-olds and has parental controls already enabled.”

According to Simon Barry, Argos technology trading manager, MyTablet is a tablet that balances price and performance. One of the primary reasons for launching a tablet at this price point, as Barry claims, is that quite a lot of families are “feeling worse off this Christmas than last,” and Argos wanted to launch a tablet with pricing such that “everyone in the family can have one.”

“Argos is already a destination for tablets. So it made sense to let customers buy one on our own brand range. We think it will help us to extend the category out to different Argos customers”, Joanne Savage, head of own-brand products at Argos notes The Financial Times.

According to claims made by Tesco, as many as 35,000 Hudl devices have already been sold within first ‘few days’ of launch and it would be interesting to see how MyTablet fares.
