Android tablets dethrone iPads to become new tablet kings claims Gartner

Posted on 4 March 2014

Google’s Android based tablets have outsold Apple iPads to become 2013’s dominant tablet operating system.

Gartner’s latest research data released on Monday suggests that Android with a whopping market share of 62 percent is now the leading tablet operating system.

With sales of almost 121 million devices during 2013, compared to 53 million in 2012, Android is now well ahead of its other rivals.

Just behind Android is the tablet inventor Apple that managed to sell around 70.4 million units up from 61 million in 2012 grabbing a 36 percent market share as compared to 53 percent in 2012.

The worldwide tablet sales reached 195.4 million units in 2013 witnessing a 68% increase on 2012, the research company reported.

Apple, however still remains the top tablet maker with a 36 percent market share selling 70.4 million units followed by its nearest rival Samsung with a share of 19.1 percent selling 37.4 million units and Asus with 5.6 percent market share with 11 million units.

Amazon and Lenovo with a market share of 4.8 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively, also made it to the top five.

The analyst group predicted that the tablet market will be witnessing a major transformation in the years to come with sophisticated buyers upgrading to new “hybrid ultramobile” devices with physical keyboards to offer users the best of both tablet and laptop devices.

Gartner’s research director, Roberta Cozza, said: “There is an opportunity here for hybrid ultramobiles to marry the functionality of a PC and a tablet, and they will also prove to be an attractive alternative replacement product among businesses.”
