Alacatel TOUCH Hero 2+ culled

Posted on 1 July 2015

Even before its launch the Cyanogen-powered Alcatel Touch Hero 2+ has been buried in its grave – a development that could mean a set back for Cyanogen, which was about to receive a huge break with a launch of a handset by an internationally recognised brand.

The news of demise of TOUCH Hero 2+ comes in the form of a joint statement by the two companies. Though the two will continue working on a new device that will run Cyanogen OS, but we are not sure when that will happen as no information has been made available yet.

Earlier in March, the two companies had jointly announced their plans of releasing a revamped version of the Hero 2 running Cyanogen OS. The Alcatel partnership is a crucial one for Cyanogen considering that the company has its reach in Europe as well as the US. Cyanogen does have similar partnerships with OnePlu and Micromax, but their reach is quite limited as far as international markets are concerned.

The Hero 2 is definitely a good phablet with its 6-inch screen capable of 1080p display, octa-core MediaTek chip, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. If you are a photo enthusiast, the Hero 2 wouldn’t let you down with its 13-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel front one.

The March announcement was exciting for CyanogenMod fans, but the two companies have now decided that they will be culling the Hero 2+. Both the companies have revealed that the Hero 2 “does not have a clear Android 5.1 upgrade path” indicating that they have had to face technical issues that is making it either impossible to run Cyanogen OS run on the smartphone or the performance levels are too low.

However, these are mere speculations as neither of the companies have made clear what exactly the issues are. The two companies have said that they are now developing a new smartphone that will be powered by Cyanogen OS.

It seems like a fresh start for the two and back to the drawing boards as their first attempt may have been halfhearted. What say?
