Even before the hype around Windows Phone 8.1 sinks, Microsoft has inadvertently spilled the beans of Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, known as Update 1, with a post on Microsoft’s Developer site.
The software giant has accidentally published details about the first update for Windows Phone 8.1, revealing some details and certain hints on what to expect from the forthcoming update.
First spotted by WP Central, the post on the Developers site, since removed, listed the new features and support parameters in the release including a mix of behind-the-scenes improvements as well as the end-user features.
The upcoming update 1 will have the addition of Start screen folders – allowing Windows Phone users to drag one Live Tile onto another for creating a folder – which is a feature available for iOS and Android users for years.
The update will also include Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support, Network Time Protocol (NTP) support for clock synchronization between devices, higher-quality Bluetooth music (through aptX) and the smartphone manufacturer-defined custom lock screens. Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 will bring phonebook entry for Cortana enabling better integration between the digital assistant and in-car navigation systems.
Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 will also include smart cover support similar to the HTC’s Dot View Case. The Verge reports, citing sources familiar with company’s plans, that HTC could be preparing a One M8 version designed for Windows Phone, that will make use of this added support.
The release is reported to enable wider screen support, with a new 1280×800 screen resolution added for the 7-inch screen. The update will also add a new OS compression mechanism that will bring Windows Phone operating system onto cheaper handsets with a mere 4GB of onboard storage.
Microsoft is yet to officially announce the update and the release date. However, the Verge claims that the update could be rolled out as early as next week.
