Microsoft has confirmed that all existing Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8 will be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 10 without issues thereby indicating that hardware requirements of WP10 won’t be different from those of WP8.
The confirmation comes from official Lumia twitter account in response to a question. “There will be Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices : ) And we will release new Windows 10 models in the future!” read the tweet from official Lumia account.
This confirms previous rumours partially that claimed that all Windows Phone 8 devices will be able to run Windows Phone 10. If you read the tweet again, you will find that it only makes mention of Lumia devices, meaning that it doesn’t talk about non-Lumia devices. We are not sure at the moment whether Microsoft will lock out smartphones from other vendors from receiving the WP10 upgrade, but this seems highly unlikely.
It could be the case that Windows Phone 10 will first be released for all Lumia smartphones and once that rollout is complete, other vendors will be rolling out updates for their handsets.
This raises the question as to when is Microsoft planning to release Windows Phone 10. According to previous reports, WP10 is still in its infancy, but there are rumours that claim that Microsoft will release Windows Phone 10 alongside Windows 10 – probably during the first half of 2015.
There have been talks about Microsoft wanting to merge Windows RT and Windows 10 platforms in a bid to not only remove the confusion surrounding multiple platforms, but also to streamline development and do away with fragmentation.
