If recent reports are to be believed then WhatsApp messaging service could soon have its web version rolled out.
Bolstering that rumor is a recent interview of rival messaging app Telegram’s co-founder, Pavel Durov, who revealed WhatsApp could be working on a web version “since they tried to hire our web dev”.
Furthermore a recent discovery by the team at AndroidWorld.nl also appeared to back up Durov’s suspicions. According to the Dutch website, ‘WhatsApp Web’ has been mentioned inside the code of a recent WhatsApp update. The code also mentions logging in to a web service along with references to tracking statuses online.
Interestingly, the code has no mention of Facebook as such, indicating that users might not need to log into the web-based service via their respective Facebook accounts but instead use their phone number for any pairing and verification.
As there’s still no official word from WhatsApp regarding the matter, therefore all this seems to be mere speculation so far. Of course it remains to be seen if the alleged feature will ever see the light of day.
With over 600 million users, WhatsApp is the largest messaging service that still doesn’t offer a web version. Rival messaging apps Line, Viber, Telegram and WeChat all allow users to message either using phone or web.
