Messaging apps have become mainstream with shot messaging service or SMS for short taking the back seat and one of the front runners in the instant messaging industry is WhatsApp with a whopping 700 million monthly active users.
Facebook owned messaging app adding a 100 million monthly active users in just over 4 months – back in August 2014, it had 600 million monthly active users.
The latest statistics about the active users base were shared by company’s CEO Jan Koum through a post on Facebook who wrote that users are sending 30 billion messages per day.
If we are to compare WhatsApp with other services’ user base, it is quite bigger than Twitter’s 284 million, and Instagram’s 300 million.
“We’re grateful that so many of you are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates,” Koum wrote.
The increasing user base of the messaging services should help Facebook placate investors’ fears about its acquisition strategy, despite the $19 billion purchase price being one of the largest deals in the history of Silicon Valley.
In related WhatsApp news, there were reports that the messaging service was testing a ‘call via Skype’ feature that could enable users to place voice calls through to their WhatsApp friends.
