Following the footsteps of Three, UK operator Vodafone has come up with “WorldTraveller” roaming initiative, scrapping data roaming charges in 8 countries for an all-inclusive price of £5 per day.
Vodafone WorldTraveller allows customers to use their existing plans for minutes, texts and data when abroad in Australia, Egypt, Ghana, India, New Zealand, Qatar, South Africa and USA, for a cost of £5 a day. Incoming calls and texts are completely free for Pay Monthly customers, who can opt for the service by dialling 5555 from their Vodafone mobile.
Vodafone is reportedly looking to compete with Three’s “Feel at Home” service, which lets customers on PayG, Pay Monthly, and SIM-only, use minutes, texts and data packages as per their existing plans in 16 destinations around the world, at no additional cost.
The new WorldTraveller follows the network’s introduction of a EuropeTraveller tariff initiative in 2011, which drops roaming charges at a cost of £3 a day for users travelling to European countries. The EuropeTraveller is currently in a special offer at £2 per day until August 31, allowing even 4G roaming in Spain, Italy and Portugal.
WorldTraveller plan launch comes just a week after the European Union slashed the data costs on roaming with a new cap by around 55 percent that applies only to the EU countries. However, European legislators, led by Neelie Kroes, the EU telecoms commissioner, are looking forward to scrap roaming charges altogether by the Christmas 2015.
