Virgin Media is currently in talks with Amazon over adding streaming video service Amazon Prime Instant Video to the TiVo platform.
Tom Mockridge, chief executive, Virgin Media, addressing the Broadcasting Press Guild event in London said that “We are open to Amazon Prime Instant Video and we have talked to them. It’s a recent rebrand for them so they’re working out their position on this.”
He continued saying that ”it takes two to tango” and as Prime is still “working out” their proposition since online retailer Amazon rebranded the former LoveFilm VoD service and folded it into its website so there is nothing to report currently.
Mockridge also pointed out that Virgin Media’s key focus has always been to provide the fastest and best broadband in a market where the demand for data on its network is growing by almost 50% a year.
Mockridge also said that Virgin Media will never get involved in the battle for the Premier League football rights that BT and Sky are engaged in which he also considers as to be the “Hollywood of the UK.”
He said that Virgin had “no interest at all” in bidding for the sport rights, rather the company would prefer to continue to make deals with right holders such as Sky and BT in order to bring the content directly to Virgin customers.
