Micro-blogging giant Twitter has teamed up with Bing Translator to roll out new ‘tweet translation’ feature for users.
“Tweet translation is available on twitter.com, Twitter for iOS, Twitter for Android, and TweetDeck,” Twitter’s official support page notes.
The new feature will let users translate tweets in more than 40 language pairs including Arabic, Finnish, Italian, Persian, Turkish, Bulgarian, French, Japanese, Polish, Ukrainian, Catalan, German, Klingon, Portuguese, Urdu, Chinese Simplified, Greek, Klingon (pIqaD), Romanian, Vietnamese, Chinese Traditional, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Welsh, Czech, Hebrew, Latvian, Slovak, Danish, Hindi, Lithuanian Slovenian, Dutch, Hmong Daw, Malay, Spanish, English, Hungarian, Maltese, Swedish, Estonian, Indonesian, Norwegian, and Thai.
Twitter has warned that while Bing’s translation engine “relies on advanced translation software to provide Tweet translations, the results still vary and often fall below the accuracy and fluency of translations provided by a professional translator.”
Users can turn the tweet translation feature on or off by signing into Twitter on a desktop computer or laptop. They will need to go to account settings, locate the Tweet translation section and then change the ‘Tweet translation’ setting by checking the box next to Show Tweet translations.
In order to view the translation of a tweet in a different language, users will need to select the tweet to expand it and then click or tap the globe icon to view the translation right below the original tweet.
The feature is currently available on Twitter.com, iOS and Android apps as well as TweetDeck.
