Twitch Plays Pokémon has reported that 70,000+ players are participating in an interactive playthrough in unison with the total number of unique viewers at 300,000 (quadruple of 75000). The game has also surpassed 6.5 million views in total and continues to grow in just 5 days.
Twitch Plays Pokémon, a live-streamed playthrough of Pokémon Red/Blue that lets gamers control via chat commands, went live on Friday last week, with 8000 players playing. In the following 4 days, the game had increased its traffic to 75,000 players and is now dominating the top spot.
According to the Google Doc tracking the game’s progress, Twitch Plays Pokémon, dubbed by the channel as “Social Experiment,” has so far seen players earn four badges, capture 12 Pokemon and spot another 71. The games’ total number of button presses is more than 2.8 million.
The creator of Twitch Plays Pokémon, an Australian Programmer who prefers to stay anonymous, in an interview with Polygon said “I didn’t really have any plans for it from the beginning. I just wanted to put it up to see how people would respond. I put it together and put it up on a dedicated server all within a few days.”
“I’m going to let it continue to run 24/7, I’d like to see the Elite Four [trainers] beaten but I have my doubts about it being possible without much better coordination.”
The channel is also offering a subscription option for $4.99 with a warning “Subscribers do not get to bypass the slow mode restrictions on chat,” stating Twitch Plays Pokémon to be the best if every player has the same capacity of input.
