In-car navigation product maker TomTom has marked its entry into the action camera market with the launch of the new TomTom Bandit Action Camera.
Touted as the first-ever camera to equip a built-in media server, the Bandit allows users to process the footage in camera instead of downloading it onto a computer thus speeding up the editing process, and making it easier. The camera works with a dedicated companion app, which lets users create and share videos just by shaking their smartphones.
“We know that the biggest frustration people have with action cameras today is the time and effort it takes to edit,” says Corinne Vigreux, co-founder and managing director of TomTom Consumer.
“With TomTom Bandit we’ve cut the editing time down from hours to minutes – all it takes is a shake!”
The TomTom Bandit Action Camera is equipped with in-camera motion and GPS sensors to automatically find and tag exciting moments based on speed, altitude, G-force, acceleration and heart rate. Users can also manually tag highlights, of course.
With its viewfinder and media server, the companion app enables users to review their footage instantly. In editing mode, a simple shake of the smartphone instantly creates a final movie. Users can then make easy edits like add music, metric overlays before sharing with friends.
TomTom’s Bandit camera is waterproof down to 50metres and uses a wide-angle lens, with a 16-megapixel CCD sensor and a built-in processor. Video shooting formats include 1080p at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps, 720p at 60fps, and720p at 120fps and there are more cinematic options to record at 4k15 and 2.7k30 as well. Other features include slow-mo and time lapse capabilities and single shot or burst photography settings.
The Batt-Stick combines the battery, microSD card and SuperSpeed USB 3.0. It plugs directly into a computer via USB to charge and download footage, removing the need for additional cables or adapters. The 1,900-mAh battery promises to provide up to three hours of 1080/30p recording.
Priced at £299.99, the TomTom Bandit Action Camera will be available for purchase on www.tomtom.com in May. A premium pack will also be available in June including additional accessories which will retail at £379.99.
