Sony has reportedly sold Sony Online Entertainment, the publisher behind DC Universe Online, Everquest Next and Planetside 2, to a New York-based Investment management firm Columbus Nova for an undisclosed amount.
As part of the deal, Columbus Nova has rebranded the studio with the new name of Daybreak Game Company.
“[E]ffective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company,” the SOE team noted in a blog post on the official Sony Online Entertainment forum.
“Yes, that means PlayStation and Xbox, mobile and more!”
The SEO team confirmed that the acquisition deal will not change what the studio is working on and that all existing games will continue to function as normal including H1Z1, EverQuest Next, EverQuest Landmark and other game projects that started at SOE.
“Our games and players are the heart and soul of our organization, and we are committed to maintaining our portfolio of online games and pushing the limits of where we can take online gaming together,” the studio said.
Announcing the news, John Smedley, the President of Daybreak Game Company, said “We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming.”
