A patent awarded to Sony for a flat joystick controller in June 2012 – possibly the design for PlayStation Move 2 – has been published this month indicating that the controller could be launched sometime soon and possibly before Christmas.
From the picture above you can see that the new PlayStation Move controller packs a touchpad surface, but other than that it is very much like its predecessor.
Sony explains in the patent that it won’t be appropriate for a controller like PlayStation Move to have a joystick considering the active nature of the controller and the way in which it is intended to be used. When it comes to providing inputs through the use of motions, it will be hard for a user to keep the thumb still on a joystick explains Sony.
“However, using a touch input surface, the thumb can be kept still while continuing to provide the user’s input by pressing on the input surface. The pressing of the user’s finger on the input surface causes friction that is recognized”, reads the patent.
Original PlayStation Move was launched back in September 2010 and Sony managed to sell over 15 million units of its controller. It has been three years since an upgrade and it is about time that Sony launched its touch-enabled PlayStation Move 2 to match its DualShock 4.
