SanDisk has just taken the wraps of an SD card, claimed to be the largest-capacity SD card ever, with a whopping storage space of 512 gigabytes (512GB).
Dubbed as the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I memory card, the new SD card was unveiled at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam this Thursday.
The new 512GB SanDisk Extreme Pro offers nearly 1,000 times more capacity than the company’s 512MB SD card unveiled more than a decade ago.
Sized as small as a postage stamp, the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I memory card offers write speeds of 90MB/s as well as transfer speeds of 95MB/s, along with UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) recording speed for 4K videos.
The memory card is designed especially for use by photography and video professionals shooting 4K Ultra High Definition (3,840 x 2,160p) and Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) videos where a single minute of footage typically takes up 5GB of storage space.
Dinesh Bahal, vice-president of product marketing at SanDisk said that the 4K Ultra HD is an example of a technology that is pushing the company to develop new storage solutions capable of handling massive file sizes.
According to SanDisk, the new memory card, which is built to handle a lot of wear and tear, is completely “temperature proof, water proof, shock proof, and X-ray proof.”
Available worldwide, the 512GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card will be available for a price amounting to £490 ($800).
