Having failed bitterly after raising expectations for an iris scanner shortly before the launch of Galaxy S5, Samsung is likely reviving its efforts to bring it to the next device on its launch schedule in a few months.
The company tweeted an image in the SamsungExynos official account, demonstrating how security can be improved with the use of a retina scanner to unlock the device.
Samsung, though failed to provide a retina scanner, offered a fingerprint scanner with its Galaxy S5. It works similar to Apple’s fingerprint scanner on its iPhone S5 and Motorola’s Atrix 4G. Though Motorola managed to bring it to its device as early as 2011, it was not an eye-turner as it had several software bugs and a majority of smartphone owners could not see how it can be a smart way to secure the device and information.
Apple took control by making it easy to set up and use the feature, which is an innovation the company is looked up to by its users and rivals. The company is also opening doors for third-party app developers by letting them incorporate Touch ID in their apps developed for iOS 8.
Samsung’s Lee Young Hee, in an interview with Bloomberg earlier this year said that the company has realized that people are “fanatical” about the iris recognition technology and that Samsung is “studying the possibility” of incorporating it in the devices that will be launched in future but is not sure whether or not it will be able to bring it to Galaxy S5.
As its experiments did not prove successful, the company saved it for later and offered a standard fingerprint scanner like the one seen on iPhone 5S. However, the iris scanner is expected to be included in its upcoming device Galaxy Note 4, scheduled for a launch in September this year.
