Samsung Electronics on Thursday announced that all its upcoming smart television products, which are scheduled for a 2015 launch, will come powered by the Tizen operating system.
The South Korean electronics giant although did not disclose market availability or pricing details of the Tizen based TVs, but it did say that the first-ever Tizen smart TVs would be unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas scheduled from January 6 to 9. The operating system will allow smart TVs to sync with other devices through a Wi-Fi connection allowing content to be shared between devices.
“We are focussing our efforts on Tizen right now,” Kim Hyun-suk, Samsung’s president of visual display business, told Reuters.
“We hope that other TV makers will also use it and help build an ecosystem that will help the platform grow.”
Samsung, the world’s largest handset maker, has developed the Tizen operating system along with companies led by Intel to lower its reliance on Google’s Android operating system. The announcement comes as part of the company’s latest attempt to beef up its software capabilities.
Tizen can be applied to mobile devices, digital cameras as well as home appliances. Samsung has launched Tizen-based digital cameras, smartphones like the Samsung Z and Galaxy Gear and Samsung Gear S smartwatches in 2014.
