Roku on Monday announced it has successfully sold a whopping 10 million video streaming devices in the US alone.
The company, which introduced its first product in May 2008, claims users have streamed over 5 billion hours of content since its debut. It is expected that users will stream 3 billion hours of content this year alone. The statistics shows that the US demand for web-content in the living room is really kicking off.
Despite of achieving the 10 million sales milestones, Roku is still way behind rival Apple which claims to have sold 20 million Apple TV units as of April since its 2007 launch.
Although Roku did not reveal overseas sales details for now, it says the Bay Area, Washington DC, Seattle, Atlanta and Phoenix in US are the hottest spots for its 1,800-plus streaming channels. The video streaming device maker says it offers 1,000 more channels than Amazon’s Fire TV, Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast including Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, Pandora, and more.
According to NPD data, Roku accounts for 37 million hours of video streamed per week as compared to Apple TV’s 15 million, Chromecast’s 12 million, and Amazon Fire TV’s at 6 million hours.
Roku thanked all of its supporters for making everything happen and has pledged to continue delivering the best streaming TV experience to the U.S. market.
