Facebook’s own video service is moving fast to be at par with YouTube in terms of video sharing numbers and could soon overtake YouTube to become the number one video sharing website, new report claims.
According to research conducted by social media analytics firm, Socialbakers, Facebook is posing a real threat to Google owned YouTube in terms of video consumption patterns. The research included analysis of 20,000 Facebook pages and over 180,000 posts over a period of one year until September 2014. The study found that there has been a steep increase in the number of marketing videos uploaded directly to Facebook this year.
“The content marketers are directly uploading video content to Facebook, meaning that Facebook is retaining the traffic at the expense of YouTube,” reported Socialbakers on its website.
“Marketers are going to continue to use the network that is most effective for gaining engagement. Basically, there are no signs of the trend reversing from its current path,” the report noted.
Jan Rezab, CEO Socialbakers feels that this could be a “big deal for YouTube” since they could be losing a big portion of their distribution network being snatched by Facebook . This means that users will stay on Facebook for uploading and sharing videos instead of switching to an external video content source like YouTube, Rezab added.
Facebook has also been boosting up efforts to maintain its user base and trying hands on new and interesting features to alleviate stagnation. In September, the social networking giant announced that it was offering users up to one billion videos a day.
