Sony cheerfully declared on Thursday that its next-gen console, the PlayStation 4, has outdone Xbox One in terms of sales figures for the month of January in the US.
According to latest data from the NPD Group, PS4 is the top selling console for the month of January as it successfully sold more units than Microsoft Xbox One.
Liam Callahan from the NPD Group, said that “PS4 led overall hardware sales this month, followed by the Xbox One.”
John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America Marketing Vice President, confirmed the victory in a PlayStation blog post.
“The response has been fantastic. In the U.S., PS4 was #1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor. And PS4 remains the cumulative leader here based on today’s report from the NPD Group.”
The PlayStation 4 is also leading in the worldwide sales count and its numbers is expected to rise even more after its Feb. 22 Japan launch.
Xbox One came in at second spot with Microsoft announcing that Xbox One sold 2.29 times faster than its previous model. Microsoft also revealed that the company sold a total of 2.27 million units of Xbox One and Xbox 360. The software giant also claimed that its Xbox game sales accounted for 47 percent of all game software sales.
According to NPD report, Call Of Duty: Ghosts was the best-selling game of January 2014, with NBA 2K14, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Grand Theft Auto V, Madden NFL 25, Minecraft, FIFA 14, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and Tomb Raider 2013 making it to the top 10 position.
While total software sales for the month accounted for $224 million, total hardware sales stood at $241 million.
