Oculus’ vision of ushering a new era in virtual reality gaming has taken one step further towards reality as Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 is now available for $350 expected to ship in July.
“Almost exactly one year after shipping the original dev kit, we’re pleased to announce DK2, the second development kit for the Oculus Rift!” announced Oculus in a blog post.
Oculus revealed that many of the consumer level functionalities “including a low-persistence, high-definition display and precise, low-latency positional head tracking” are part of the latest DK2 that takes cues from Oculus’ Crystal Cove prototype. Like the Crystal Cove prototype DK2 uses low-persistence OLED to eliminate motion blur and judder.
Thanks to low-latency positional head tracking, developers will be able to utilise 6-degrees-of-freedom to open up “all sorts of new gameplay opportunities like peering around corners, leaning in to get a closer look at objects in the world, and kicking back on a virtual beach.”
Some of the other inclusions in DK2 are built-in latency tester, on-headset USB accessory port, redesigned SDK, new optics, optimised Unity and Unreal Engine 4 integrations among other things.
Developers can buy the second version of the Oculus Rift dev kit for $350 directly from the VR company’s website.
